The spcaLA Completed My Family And Now, I Am Giving Back

It’s 1 month into 2018, do you know where your resolutions are? If you’re like me, you probably left them in that forgotten abyss of “daily life” and can barely remember what you said you were going to do. For the most part, the usual ‘sleep more, lose weight, etc…’, don’t phase me, but the one I was really disappointed in not fulfilling, was wanting to be more actively devoted to philanthropy by giving back to charities I am close to. I recently set out to see how I could start contributing, but with my already busy schedule, and family budget, it was pretty hard! Imagine how happy I was when I found out that one of my favorite stores to shop for my family at, JCPenney, believes in giving back just as much as I do.

I am so excited to partner with JCPenney for this post, because they are making a $9,000 donation, in my nameto the spcaLA, to help more animals in the Los Angeles area. The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Los Angeles (spcaLA) is an independent, nonprofit animal welfare organization serving Southern California since 1877. Donations run programs and services including Cruelty Investigations, Disaster Animal Response Team, Humane Education and a variety of shelter services. I am a huge animal lover, and have 5 pets of my own! We have 3 cats, a dog and a turtle, and I swear, if we had the space, we would have as many pets as possible. Thanks to the work of the spcaLA, I adopted two of my babies from a local animal shelter, my cat, Finn, and my dog, Lila.

Lila was a stray, anxious and distrusting of people. The shelter took her in, gave her the medical care and grooming she needed to find her forever home. The very second I saw her, I knew she belonged to our family. She is the baby of the family, and all of us cuddle her every second we can.

Finn was abandoned, adopted once, only to be returned. When he was placed in my arms, he started purring and huddled into me and I was smitten. He’s a big cuddler, and a total mama’s boy. I can’t imagine what my life would have been like if I hadn’t found him.

If you have ever had a pet, you know that they are family. It hurts my heart when I think of so many animals homeless, hungry, and hurting. I am thankful that spcaLA is full of animal lovers who believe that animals, as living creatures, have value beyond economic measurement, and are entitled to legal, moral and ethical consideration and protection. The spcaLA is funded solely by donations from individuals, foundations, and corporations like JCPenney.

I love knowing that when I shop there for my daughter’s back to school clothes, my husband’s favorite tee shirts, or even, a new outfit for me, that I’m spending money at a company that gives back to local charities everywhere – charities like spcaLA.   10. Camp erin! They help kids who have a close family loss deal with grief in healthy and fun ways at an over night camp!

  11. Lazarex canceer foundation is. I have lost several close family members to rare agreesive forms and they specilaize in that care.

  15. Genetic disorder charities. These disorders are so horrible and affect so many lives. The expenses are not fully covered by insurance and the hospitalizations are numerous.

  17. catholic charities, because they have helped me at different stages of my life and helped others in my community

  18. I love Helping Hounds Dog Rescue, based in Syracuse, NY. That is where I got our resuce dog from, and he is my family’s best friend!

  19. Charities that represent animals are always my pick. I take care of a 40+ cat colony at my own expense. This is including trapping and fixing them. Our town has no TNR program but I love sponsoring charities that help with this need.

  20. I’m close to St Jude’s because I’ve always wanted to help children!

  21. The local humane society because they have provided me with my furry family are always there to help homeless animals.

  22. I am partial to the SIDS Foundation. We had a son die at two month from SIDS.

  23. St. Jude is the one that is closest to my heart. I like that they help children.

  24. Finn has the prettiest eyes! I definitely love supporting our local animal shelter! We would adopt all the animals if we could! We love Southern Pines Animal Rescue

  28. Women’s Shelter’s and Domestic Violence organizations are where my heart goes when it comes to charities. I was engaged to an abusive man in my teens, only after being raped repeatedly did I gather the courage to reach out for help and leave. Then after a failed marriage I married a man who abused me physically, mentally & verbally to the point I didn’t feel worthy of being a person anymore. I had no support, no help and no where to turn. I ended up homeless, living in a camper, washing my children’s clothing in a river. I want to help women who have no where else to go, who are scared and helpless. I want to empower them, let them know they have worth and a future.

  29. My charity is the American Cancer society. I know too may affected by this horrible disease

  31. The Red Cross is near to my heart! They helped us when we had a apartment fire years ago!

  33. I like the local food charity Manna on Main St. They help feed people in the local area.

  35. Any charity that helps animals, I can’t stand to see animals suffer.

  36. ASPCA because I feel that ALL animals deserve to have the best life they can.

  37. There is a group called “Feline Rescue” where I adopted my two cats. They are a non profit shelter for cats (obviously) and save lots of city kittens who would otherwise have hard lives.

  38. I like NW Pilot Project. They help seniors find homes so they won’t be homeless in Portland.

  39. St. Judes is one for me. My mom always donated to them and even more so when she was dying of cancer.

  40. The American Heart Association is close to my heart. I lost my mother when she was 51 to heart disease and I want to support an organization that can bring research and awareness to heart disease.

  41. The Devoted Barn is close to my heart. They rescue feral, abused, and injured animals.

  42. The charities closest to my heart are the Humane Society and the Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals because I love animals and hate to see them suffer. Thanks for the giveaway!

  44. I’m totally with you on the animal charities. They are defenseless and so many suffering due to humans. Good for you for your rescue babies!

  45. Juvinile Diabetes-JDRF because my sister has been living with it since she was 2 years old. Want to help other kids who are dealing with it and to help find a cure.

  46. We support the Parkinson’s Foundation because my dad died of Parkinson’s

  47. St. Jude is one of my favorites. I love that no child is turned away due to their ability to pay because parents should just be able to focus on their children when they’re sick, not finances.

  51. Harvesters, because families can’t concentrate on building themselves up if they’re hungry; basic needs come first.

  52. St Jude’s because children are very close to my heart. And any charity that helps children is close to my heart.

  53. My favorite charity is Goodwill. They hire a lot of disadvantaged kids to work there.

  55. There’s a teen pregnancy center near my home that I donate baby items to. I think they’re doing great work!

  56. I love soldier’s angels and richmond animal league. Pretty much any charity that benefits animals hits a soft spot for me.

  57. St. Jude has is close to my heart. Researching and finding cures for cancers is essential for better life.

  59. The Fisher House Foundation is near to my heart. My husband is in the military and their mission hits so close to home for me.

  60. We are very fond of youth leadership organizations that give kids a chance that they would not otherwise have. So much so that my daughter is about to graduate from college in non-profit management and she works for a local community after school program.

  61. We have a local pet rescue called Two By Two that does so much for animals in our area.

  62. I like to donate to the local Goodwill and also to animal shelters. I like to donate to these charities because I like to help others and I am a big animal lover and help local shelters whenever I can.

  63. The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation is close to my heart because my grandma is a breast cancer survivor! She received chemotherapy and radiation and is doing great now.

  64. As a former ICU nurse, organ donation agencies and the American Heart Association are close to my heart

  65. I really like the Make a Wish foundation. Making these kids dreams come true is amazing.

  66. Childrens’ hospitals are close to my heart because I really appreciate how my daughter was treated when she was a toddler.

  68. The ronald mcdonald house. It really helped to have thier support and a place to stay when my nephew was a mico preemie and having the stay in the hospital for so long.

  70. Local Humane Societies. They take in and adopt out animals that need homes.

    Animal Rescue: I applaud the ASPCA for helping with this problem of stray animals.

    Goodwill. I applaud their endeavor to teach us to share what we don’t want with others; instead of throwing things in the TRASH.

    Salvation Army. I know they are also teaching us to reuse things and share what we don’t want.
    D) Food Banks. Saying thank you for the many food banks which provide food to those in need. When I think of food banks; Food Link comes to mind. I know there are many more out there.

  72. I like habitat for humanity. Good organization helping those to get back on their feet with a new foundation, literally. Gives back to those in need of a living space. ?

  73. I donate to the United Way because they use the funding for multiple purposes. I also support my local no kill humane society; i adopted one of my furbabies there several years ago.

  74. I try to give to any kinds of cancer charities. I lost my dad to cancer, so I want to help as many people as I can.

  75. St. Jude’s and non-kill animal shelters are close to my heart because St. Jude’s help kids even when families can’t afford it, and I love animals.

  77. I like the Best Friends Animal Society. I’ve been volunteering with them since 2013 and have had a great time, plus I love being able to help the animals.

  78. ACCESS – Assault Care Centre Extended Shelter & Support is a cause that is very close to me. They help women and their children (if they have any) escape abusive relationships and situations. They provide shelter at a secret and secured location (locked with codes and surveillance) and provide free food, clothing, toiletries, therapy groups, help look for work and save up for a place to live, get a car, etc. I have helped run drives to collect clothes and toiletries for them and try to connect women to them who I come across that seem to be in bad situations.

  79. The local food bank because they fed me when I was going through a hard time.

  80. Dog rescues of any kind but especially German Shepherd ones. I have three GSD’s now and have had one other that is dearly missed. I lost my Dane mix female last year and miss her terribly too.

  81. I like the Relay for Life. When I was in elementary school one of my friends died of Leukemia. Our entire class celebrated his life each year at Relay for Life all the way through high school.

  82. My favorite is Mountain House cat rescue. They catch cats and spay/neuter them so the population stays down. There used to be so many cats/kittens in our area getting hit by cars but because they’ve gotten the population down you hardly see it anymore

  84. My favorite charity is my local ARC chapter because they do so much for disabled people and their families in our area.

  85. My favorite charity is one for Women’s Abuse Home. It helps abused women find a new home.

  86. St Judes and Make a wish because they both work with kids like my daughter and make a wish granted her a wish trip to walt disney world two years ago due to her medical condition

  87. I like Bread of Healing Clinic because they help those that can’t afford health insurance.

  88. St.Judes. It helps children cure their cancer, and helps the family financial.

  89. The charity dearest to my heart is a local free medical clinic because you never know if you’ll be in need.

  91. I really have a heart for all animal charities. They are filled with unconditional love and have no malice in their hearts. I wish I could adopt them all. Every pet owner gets so much back from their animals, probably more than we deserve!

  92. I love ST. Judes. They do not charge anything to the families of children who are just fighting to be healthy again.

  94. The charities closest to my heart are ones that protect the welfare and rights of animals – for example, Farm Sanctuary, whose mission is to help abused farm animals. I believe all creatures are deserving of a life free of unnecessary harm.

  95. The charity that is closest to my heart is Formosa Mountain Missions because they work with The Home of God’s Love in Taiwan. That is the orphanage that we adopted our daughter from.

  96. St. Jude’s is very close to my heart. We were once told that our daughter could have cancer. That was the hardest day of our lives. The parents and children at St. Jude’s need all the help that they can get.

  99. My favorite charity is Kalamazoo Animal Rescue, a no-kill fostering organization that has been doing great work since 1991. This is where I got 2 of my 3 cats, one of which looks like the brother of your cat! And I love JC Penney!

  100. American Cancer Society, because they have helped through my breast cancer.

  101. The local food bank, the local Children’s Hospital and as a Heart attack victim the American Heart Association is near and dear to MY HEART!

  103. My favorite charity is the American Cancer Society. Many members of my family had or died from cancer.

  105. Make a Wish Foundation because they do wonderful things for children and their families

  106. Austin Pets Alive and Blue Cat Cafe here in Austin. I love them both for how much care they give to their furbabies!!

  107. Favorite Charity is Children’s Dream Fund here in Florida – they grant dreams to children with life threatening illnesses – they have been at it longer than make a wish and have a great charity rating. Your money goes to the dream!!

  108. We Are RARE and Schizencephaly Awareness ..I have schizencephaly and it breaks my heart seeing the stories of all the families that deal with this daily.

  109. St. Judes Hospital, because I am so grateful that my child never dealt with cancer.

  111. St. Johns Womens and Childrens Shelter is near and dear to my heart. I volunteered at the shelter during high school, worked with the children and watched over the years as it grew into an amazing program that helped many women and their young children get their life together.

  113. I love Doctors Without Borders! My husband is studying to be a doctor, so I have seen firsthand how much of a sacrifice it is to become a doctor. I think it’s amazing that these people work so hard to become one and then they continue to sacrifice their comfort and their financial stability to provide relief to others who are suffering,

  116. I usually give to local charities. I worked for a homeless shelter here in Wilmington, Good Shepherd Center, and I support them.

  117. Closest to my heart! The American Heart Association — I’ve had two people very close to me pass away from heart attacks and I know there is much more work that can be done in this field.

  118. St. Jude Chidren’s Hospital because I want all children to be healthy

  119. The American Red Cross. is close to my heart. They go above and beyond to help those who need help such as fire, flood, hurricane victims.

  120. Our local South Charlotte Animal Rescue, as well as the rescue I got my pup from in Georgia! We drove over 4 hours away to adopt our pup! I also donate all our used household/ clothing items to a rescue that sells to provide for the expenses of the rescue( Paws in the Panhandle)

  122. You know, I ran the cat side of an animal rescue for a few years, altering (spaying and neutering) over 600. The name is Wags and Whiskers, in TN. There was a significant problem with strays in the area and we were able to help slow down the reproduction rate, while finding homes for any we were able to rescue.

  123. Goodwill because it helps people get jobs to support their family.

  127. I love Samaritans purse Christmas shoebox program! My daughter and I do it together every year it teaches her about giving and it sends the gospel to the receiver.

  128. ASPCA is the charity that is closest to my heart because I love animals.

  129. American Liver Foundation because my late husband died waiting for a liver transplant.

  130. St Jude childrens It breaks my heart to see so many kids go through things that i wish i could help or change in so many ways.

  131. The charity closest to my heart is Christian and Missionary Alliance because they give so much to spread the gospel of Jesus Christ around the world.

  133. I love everything that St. Judes and the Make A Wish Foundation does for kids, so whenever I can I give to them.

  134. I love Easter Seals. My son is on the Autism Spectrum and they were really there for him and our family.

  135. Animal Humane of NM. They are local group that has done wonders for the animals of our area.

  136. I try to donate to the Humane Society as well as local animal rescues when I can. Because I love animals, all my pets have always been rescues.

  137. Make a wish is close to my heart for several reasons. Members of my family had a wish granted for a family vacation that would not have been possible otherwise due to medical costs and medical needs. My mother in law was also very involved with the foundation and it does exactly what it set out to do.

  139. The Agape Pantry because it is local and all donations and proceeds stay in the community.

  141. We give to our local animal shelter. Thats where I got both my fur babies.

  142. Humane Society in any town because they do so much good in rescuing animals and then adopting them out to loving families.

  143. I have always stood behind the SPCA. Animals are innocent and need protection.

  146. Any local charities are always close to my heart. You can see first hand the difference it makes right out your back door. Kindness can be contagious and is good for us!

  147. I like shopping at Goodwill and I have done work with Habitat for Humanity in the past.

  153. Hearts United for Animals. I’m “mama” to a former breeding dog that suffered irreparable physical and emotional damage in a puppy mill, so this rescue means the world to me. Hua.org takes in these neglected and often forgotten dogs and they are shown the love and comfort that they deserved all along. If a dog is not adoptable, he/she will become part of their permanent “family”.

  154. We love to help local rescues. The animals don’t have a choice and have no means to help themselves.

  155. My church runs a huge food bank for the community and many people rely on it.

  156. The National Breast Cancer Foundation is very dear to me because they paid for my two partial mastectomy surgeries when I didn’t have the health insurance to pay for them.

  157. My local women’s shelter is important to me because it gives back to women in my area in need.

  158. I do not have a national charity close to my heart. I do like to support local churches by donating items. I also have donated to individual families that have lost their belongings in a disaster such as a fire.

  159. American Cancer Society because it has affected my family members and St Jude because it helps childern.

  160. Give Kids the World, is in Orlando, Florida and it is where special needs family stay on their Make a Wish trips to the Magic Kingdom or Universal. They are run by volunteers and depend on donations that all goes to the running of this awesome place.

  161. Our local foster care foundation is very close to my heart. They provide christmas gifts, clothes, etc for youth in foster care

  163. I always contribute to the Ronald McDonald House because they helped my friend when she was a child and receiving radiation daily.

  164. I’ve always been a huge supporters of the ASPCA. We got our 2 cats from their and often donate dog and cat food from my couponing hobby.

  165. I truly love the work that Smile Train does. They bring so much joy to children all over the world.

  166. I donate to the National MS Society. My daughter and many others I know have MS.

  167. i like to donate to the humane society. i got my dog from a shelter so i know how that money helps the shelters.

  168. One of my favorite local charities is Foodlink, which partners with area businesses to get food to the people who need it most in our area,

  169. My local city and church food banks. There is so many people around that really rely on this food so they can use their money for other necessities.

  171. I love the stand up for pits foundation. They do great work protecting pit bulls across the country!

  172. The Wounded Warrior project is close to my heart for all they do for our heros. I have service members in my family who have been wounded.

  173. I am a huge fan of the SPCA… however, I am notorious for adding to our family every single time I volunteer there! I can’t resist those sweet fur babies, and I really believe the animals are so grateful!

  174. My favorite charity is Extra Life. It’s a marathon of video games played by gamers who have collected sponsers just like a real run. They stream and update on their experiences and the money goes to children’s hospitals!

  175. Ronald McDonald house because we stayed there when my son was born. He was a very sick baby…

  176. Second Harvest Food Bank is close to my heart as they are dedicated to eliminating hunger. I volunteer in the office and the employees and volunteers are wonderful, caring people.

  178. Probably I would have to say I support the critters in need foundation because they have no middle man and give 100% to animal based rescue organizations.

  179. I work as a volunteer at my local animal shelter, St. Hubert’s in NJ. and so that is my favorite animal charity, and also I give to various children’s charities.

  180. I always support McGuire Memorial and their school. They are so good at helping their kids and adults with special needs be as independent as possible. They are very thoughtful to the people they serve. It’s very local, so they don’t receive much attention, which is a shame. They do great work!

  181. American Heart Association cause my daughter had to have 2 open heart surgeries it means a lot!

  182. I like to contribute donations to the local homeless shelter and foodbank.

  184. Our local Animal Shelter Last Hope! I have always got animals from them, they are so amazing with them. I love to watch for great deals on dog treats or toys and give to them!

  185. I woud say St. Judes because they did an amazing job helping my brother when he was younger. He got rheumatic fever and they saved his life so i’m thankful for that.

  187. A charity close to my heart is the Shriners and.. St Jude’s these children need our help and I give monthly it comes directly out of my bank account because it is the right thing to do and I wish more people would

  188. St. Jude’s hospital in Memphis is closest to my heart. Such a wonderful hospital.

  189. I support the “11th Hour Rescue” in a number of ways. I participate in the fund drives. My cat Jordan is a rescue that I picked up from a shelter.

  192. I like big brothers and sisters i think it makes a big difference for children

  193. I love the paws and claws here in town because they help homeless cats and dogs find the forever homes. and I love all cats and dogs

  194. St Jude because no kid should have to loose their childhood to cancer.

  195. The aspca is close to my heart because I was going through some terrible depression and I adopted my puppy Gidget and she truly has made my life better. I love her so much.

  196. I love the ASPCA and also a local one, the New Hampshire Humane Society. The one here in Laconia is a no kill shelter. The pets always have a home there until they find there forever home. I absolutely love that because I love animals. I’ve been known to take in a few strays and give them a home.

  197. I love the American Cancer Society. My mom is a breast cancer society and they do so much great work.

  198. The Red Cross because they are fast to respond and help people in disaster areas.

  199. Two animal shelters in Arizona are my favorite animal charities: one is for exotic birds and the other for pigs.

  200. American Cancer Society is a charity close to my heart because I’ve had several family members pass away from cancer, and I’m a breast cancer survivor.

  202. I love Seattle Children’s Hospital. Both my kids, now adults, have been there, and they are wonderful, with the best medical care.

  203. I love my local Humane Society, and Children.org. I sponsor 3 kids there, and love animals.

  204. The charity that means a lot to us is The American Heart Association. My Dad had his first heart attack at the age of 36 and died from heart disease at 51.

  205. I give to the dog shelter ( I am a sucker for animals!) and the food bank. Italians want to feed people, and that is important to me.

  207. I like to support a few local homeless shelters and also some shelters for women getting out of bad situations. And I also like Doctors without Borders and Habitat for Humanity! And local food banks, too!

  208. Charleston Animal Society is the closest to my heart because they do so much to help animals find their forever homes. They are a non-kill shelter as well. I love that!

  209. I would say the arthritis foundation since I have that I guess. I do not really have a close relationship with any.

  211. The one charity closes to my heart is Wounded Warrior Project®. I love them because I have so many friends and family in the military including 2 sons. I know they do great work for our soldiers coming back with injuries and need to get back to life with their families!

  212. All animal charities/local and national, St.Jude, Wounded Warriors, and I give to local shelters.

  213. Shriner’s Hospital. My husband was diagnosed with an incredibly rare hip disease as a child and they helped treating him. He always talks about how great they were with him and his parents during a difficult time. He remembers how they were with all the other kids and families as well. He’s made a full recovery and he says it’s all because of the great care they gave him when he was young.

  214. St. Jude Children’s Hospital is the charity my family supports. There is never a reason a child should be turned away from medical care, especially severe, life-threatening, or terminal cases. Thank you for this giveaway!

  215. I support three charities… Disabled American Veterans, St. Jude’s and ASPCA. These are close to my heart because of those they serve – men and women who serve our country & pay a high price to do so, children & animals.

  219. Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (lls.org) I am a stage four leukemia survivor and they help many with new chemo drugs research, resources and financial support.

  222. St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital because one of my best friends had leukemia when she was 5 years old and they helped her and her family.

  223. CancerCare dot org is near to my heart because I am a cancer survivor and the organization helped me when I needed it.

  224. The American Cancer Society is closest to my heart because I lost my father, a grandmother, and a grandfather to cancer!

  225. The local homeless shelter because everyone deserves to have a home.

  226. Salvation Army and our local animal shelter. I love to volunteer on Saturdays at the local shelters

  228. Definitely all the animal shelters, we have a no kill local shelter called One of a Kind Pets that I support with Amazon Smile as well as a donation of food and money whenever I can!

  230. Definitely the Humane Society these animals brought in abandoned and abused daily it is so preventable,it just breaks my heart.

  232. My favorite is Crossing Borders which helps North Koreans that escape.

  233. Feeding America is one of my favorite charities. Millions of children go hungry everyday. “A child’s chance for a bright tomorrow starts with getting enough healthy food to eat today”.   277. Hard to choose one! I love to support trusted organizations (often faith based) that provide disaster relief and direct help to the homeless and abandoned/unwanted animals. But, if I have to choose one, I’d choose my local animal shelter – Idaho Humane Society – because stray dogs/cats depend on humans for survival and it’s best to give locally rather than to umbrella/national organizations which spend a large proportion of donations on administrators salaries/pensions and marketing efforts!

  278. Sean Casey Animal Rescue is a great charity. I’ve found several stray dogs and have taken them there and they’ve been adopted out to good families.

  279. The Breast Cancer Research Foundation would be my number one. My sister and my sister in law are recovering from this illness. This is a curable cancer. I would like to see the day where everyone survives this condition. Years ago, before I was married, my roommate got breast cancer and she only survived for 5 years. I am passionate about this!
