Need ideas for what to watch this Halloween season? We’re running down some Netflix suggestions for you and the rest of the family. We have adult picks as well as teen and kid friendly suggestions for bonding time. Whether it’s a scary movie night or Halloween party these titles evoke the different genres of horror to get you in the spooky spirit of Fall!

Adults

Scream

In honor of the late Wes Craven, Scream his seminal horror film is a Halloween must watch this Halloween. Starring Neve Campbell, David Arquette and Courtney Cox, the movie follows pop-culture obsessed teens in a small town hunted by a masked killer. This scary, funny and genre self-referential franchise is great for a movie night or for a home party as Scream 2 & 3 are also streaming.

The Babadook

It’s been described as one of the best horror movies of this decade already by the likes of Guillermo Del Toro. The Babadook is directed by Australian filmmaker Jennifer Kent and centers around a single mother coping with the death of her husband when her son begins to notice an ominous presence in their home after reading a creepy pop-up storybook about the Babadook monster.

Tucker and Dale vs. Evil

Two buddies,Tucker & Dale (Played by Tyler Labine and Alan Tudyk), are on vacation at their new fixer-upper mountain cabin when they are thrust into horrific but hilarious scenarios when a group of college kids mistake them for psycho hillbillies. While a fantastic dark comedy, the ‘looks can be deceiving’ commentary boosts this horror comedy above most other parodies of this genre.

The Guest

An indie but a goodie. Director Adam Wingard and writer Simon Barrett, follow up their debut home invasion thriller You’re Next (also on Netflix) with The Guest. Starring, you-don’t-know-him-now-but-you-will-soon, Dan Stevens (Beast in 2017’s Beauty and the Beast) as David, a solider who shows up at the doorstep of the Peterson family claiming to be a close friend of their son who died in action. Charming with an air of mystery, David is welcomed into their home despite eldest daughter Anna’s (It Follows’ Mika Monroe) apprehension when a series of accidental deaths occur shortly after his arrival. This one is a gem that deserves a wider audience plus it’s a great ladies night horror flick because Dan Stevens is utterly swoon worthy.

The Crow

Based on the graphic novel by James O’ Barr and starring the late Brandon Lee, The Crow is a cult favorite. While not a scary movie, this action flick about a Gothic avenger who comes back from the dead to exact revenge for his and his fiance’s murder on Halloween. Guided by a crow, he doles poetic justice to the criminal scum that caused him and others pain. It’s action packed, romantic and good for people who don’t really want to do scary. Skip the sequels!

American Horror Story

Ryan Murphy’s Emmy winning show has brought us 4 seasons of unsettling and horrific drama. Freaky, supernatural and violent, each season brings us new characters with his troupe of players led by Jessica Lange. What’s cool about AHS, is that you can basically watch whichever season you please in no particular order as they’re each their own unique story with a beginning and end. The most popular seasons are Murder House and Coven. Freakshow will be streaming in the next couple weeks. The teaser above is for the new season of AHS: Hotel starring Lady Gaga.

Black Mirror

Definitely a show that became Netflix famous through word of mouth. The TV anthology series examines the dark side of society and technology as it could evolve in the near future. A modern day Twilight Zone, each episode presents parables that are both chilling and thought provoking. Shocking but addictive, this is a great show to catch up on before the third season drops as a Netflix original in 2016. Notable guest stars include Mad Men’s Jon Hamm (Ep.White Christmas), Star Wars Ep.VII’s Domhall Gleeson and Agent Carter’s Hayley Atwell (Ep. Be Right Back), Spectre’s Rory Kinnear (Ep. The National Anthem) and from the upcoming Warcraft movie Toby Kebbell (Ep. The Entire History of You). All the episodes mentioned will give you so many feelings!

Teens

The Monster Squad

A good family Halloween classic to introduce youths to iconic monsters like Dracula, Frankenstein, and the Wolf-man. Up there with The Goonies, Gremlins and the like, Fred Dekker’s adventure about a brave neighborhood gang of kids who happen to be the only ones knowledgeable about taking on monsters will take you back and it’s great to share with this generation.

My Sucky Teen Romance

Made when up and coming director Emily Hagins was a teen, this sharp comedy has teeth. It’s a real vampire movie about teen comic convention goers who encounter vampires after the bookish Kate falls for the good-natured but undead Paul. Unfortunately for Kate and her friends, he’s pretty much the only good one as their con gets plagued with nasty vamps and its up to them to do something about if before it’s too late for them.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer

To continue to fix this generation’s association with sparkly ‘vampires’, there aren’t better characters to introduce them to than Buffy and her Scoobies. Unto every generation there is a chosen one destined to slay vampires, demons, and other supernatural beings all while turning in her homework on time and not getting grounded. Sarah Michelle Gellar stars as the iconic slayer in the Joss Whedon (Avengers) created series. Along with her friends, Buffy saves the world…a lot.

iZombie: Season 1

The CW’s hit show about a medical student who gets bit by zombies at a party, hits Netflix just in time to get into the spirit of the season. Olivia Moore becomes a high functioning zombie with powers that help her solve murder cases. It’s a crime procedural but for teens. Season 2 is currently on the CW.

Kids

Nightmare Before Christmas

Tim Burton’s stop-motion classic pretty much dominates from October to December. Both a Halloween movie and Christmas movie, the spooky tale follows the ambitious Jack Skellington as he pursues a change after getting bored of being the Pumpkin King of frights. After stumbling upon Christmastown, he gets hit with the idea to take over the winter holiday for Santa. With the help of the citizens of Halloweentown, he passionately commits to this crazy idea before really quite thinking it through.

Goosebumps: The Series

To prepare for the upcoming feature adaptation of R.L. Stein’s books starring Jack Black, the Fox Kids show is available to watch in its entirety. Rated by creators as GB-7, as they warned audiences that episodes might be too spooky for kids under seven, the anthology series gave kids in the 90’s some after-school special scares that even as adults many still can’t shake (Slappy the Puppet gives me recurring childhood nightmares in my mid twenties). Recommended episodes are The Haunted Mask, Say Cheese and Die (Starring teen Ryan Gosling), The Blob that Ate Everything, The Werewolf of Fever Swamp, Welcome to Deadhouse, Night of the Living Dummy II and just anything with Slappy the puppet. I’m not traumatized, you’re traumatized!
