The CW surprise hit, Jane the Virgin, ended it’s first season with a “telenovela” type of cliffhanger. After Jane (Gina Rodriguez) gave birth to a baby boy (surprise! Jane expected a girl), Jane’s son appears to be kidnapped. As Jane lay recovering in her hospital room, thinking only that the nurse had taken the baby for some testing, the baby was taken by one of the attending nurses. She left the hospital and then handed the baby to a mysterious figure waiting outside in a black car, presumably owned by Sin Rostro, which then drove off with the baby inside.

WHAT.

We still have to wait until October 19th to find out what happens, but earlier this summer I got to speak with the show’s creator and producer Jennie Snyder Urman and star Yael Grobglas who plays Petra, the scheming ex-wife of Rafael (Justin Baldoni), Jane’s accidental “baby daddy”.

On the rooftop of The London Hotel in May, I spoke with Yael and Jennie, about all the questions raised by the season finale of Jane the Virgin.

Did you intentionally know how horrifying that last moment would be, even for someone who doesn’t have kids?

Jennie Snyder Urman: I have kids, so I knew.

I don’t and I think that’s horrifying!

JSU: We really wanted to lean into the telenovela at the end. We knew we had a break from May ‘til October and there’s so much great TV out there, you want people to want to come back to find out what happens. I knew. Every time I edited it, I’ve seen it 150 times, every time I was like [GASPS]. I can hardly watch. I know what it feels like. At the same time, I know what’s going to happen and what it’s going to set in motion for the second season. It sets certain things and shifts a lot of dynamics and I feel like we want each season to feel like a story. The first season was the story of this accidental insemination, this pregnancy and this birth. The second season has to come in with a new energy.

Yael, when you read in the finale that Petra got the long lost sample, what did you think she was going to do with it?

Yael Grobglas: I have no idea because Jennie won’t tell me anything. All I’m hoping for, and Jennie as my witness, maybe I’ll manage to persuade her in the right direction. I really hope that Petra does get pregnant because I’d love to see what it’s like for her to be a mother. It could go either way. It could either be she’d be a horrible mother or suddenly maybe her maternal instincts will kick in and she’ll be wonderful. She’ll be this lioness of a mother.

There were moments where it seemed she might be softening, but do you think her mean streak has totally come back?

YG: Well, I think as usual, Petra’s forced into difficult situations.

JSU: Exactly. Her real heart, she loved Rafael. She thought they were having a family together. This crazy event that happened changed everything for everyone, including Petra and I feel like we’ve surrounded her with enough people that don’t have the best intentions to help you understand why Petra does what she does. I understand Petra. I empathize with her.

I understand it. It’s difficult, but I understand it.

JSU: You just have to know where she’s coming from.

YG: Exactly, I think Jennie’s done a brilliant job with building it up to make everything justified. Even if she has a villainous moment, it’s always justified. It always comes from a place where you can understand.

JSU: To me in the finale, that scene when Rafael is flirting with her and she realizes he’s going to take her to that restaurant that meant something to them in their past, Yael’s reaction to that was incredibly vulnerable and sweet. To me, that gives her her vulnerability. She is the hero in her story so she’s doing what she needs to do in order to get her happy ending.

YG: That’s the way Jennie described it to me from day one, our very first meeting, and she’s been sticking to it.

So you want Petra to get pregnant. Is that consensually or otherwise?

YG: Well, in the finale you know Petra steals his sample. I think he just broke her heart one more time. The funny thing is, what I was playing when Petra was walking away with that sample is literally thinking, “Well, now what?” If I was in that situation, I wouldn’t even know what to do with it. Do you put it in the freezer? What do you literally do with it?

JSU: And when we come back, she will be assessing the situation and her options.

Selling it back to him would maybe be the lesser of two evils.

YG: I have no idea.

JSU: It’s a possibility.

YG: Everything’s open.

JSU: It’s a possibility but Petra knows what she wants as her endgame and her happy ending. Whatever she chooses to do is going to be in service to that.

Are you in uncharted territory now or had you had thoughts and plans this far ahead?

JSU: Yeah, yeah, we’ve planned the second season now. We’ve gotten through our second season arcs for all the characters. It’s all in motion.
