Those first years of parenthood after my daughter, Sofia, was born were chaotic, messy and just, wow – I always joke that “we survived.” We were pretty low on money most of the time, so we had hand me downs for furniture. Plus, my hair was never done, my clothes were sorted according to if they had one or more stains, and my apartment – it could be months before I would remember I had an actual floor not covered in toys or pet hair. And yet – I still took pictures because I enjoyed every second of our family life. We were happy, healthy and full of love. Fast forward to a few weeks ago when my daughter and husband were dancing in the living room, just to be silly, and when I took the photo I realized how messy the room was. So, I did what most parents do nowadays when they want to share a photo. I stopped, cleaned up…and then re-shot the photo. The sweet moment I had captured just became a staged photo opp for social media.

I sat and thought about why I do this. I mean, sure, we all want pretty pictures on our social media feeds – but that’s not real life. I am not alone in this though. Realizing this, Minute Maid realeased a survey that uncovers how parents are using social media to share their family moments online. Turns out that more than four-in-five (81%) of parents who post pictures or videos of their family on social media admit they have avoided posting a picture or video because something embarrassing was in the background, and 80% of parents have avoided posting because their house looked messy. And, 94% of parents who post pictures or videos of their family on social media admit to posing or staging at least one of them. NINETY FOUR PERCENT! With everything that parents have to worry about, why do we add creating a “highlight reel” for our social media followers?

In a way, we are doing a disservice to new parents. I remember those new mom days, trying to juggle this new part of who I was – a caretaker – while also figuring out my baby, the new stage of a relationship with my husband as parents, and which car seat was best. I can’t imagine how much stress I would have been under to actively compare my home and my life to strangers on social media. Minute Maid, a brand that I have loved for years, thinks it’s time parents got real. After all, Minute Maid is real juice for real families. Minute Maid is launching a new brand campaign, this is GOOD, to encourage parents to share more of their real family moments on social media and to celebrate their real lives.

Real life moments like when my daughter and our dog are cuddling up, but her bed has pet hair, is unmade and she’s in an old tee shirt. Or moments like when we’re baking together, and we’re both covered in flour or chocolate, but laughing and bonding despite the chaos. Or even, an everyday moment when we’re in between errands, dinner and guitar lessons, but we’re all together, grabbing a quick drink of our favorite Minute Maid juice to touch base for a few minutes, right before we’re off to the next errand or lesson.

The truth is – parenting is messy, chaotic, amazing and wonderful – all at once. You can’t edit out the crazy because you may be glossing over some of the most real moments of your life. Life isn’t always perfect, but even the messy, chaotic moments should have parents proudly saying this is GOOD.
